A leaping dolphin laminated from contrasting woods, launched from a frozen splash of clear epoxy.
Elvis is my biggest sculpture to date and was probably more than 200 hours of work. It is made from a variety of hardwoods and about 10 gallons of SuperClear Deep Pour epoxy, with a custom MDF-and-epoxy stand.
The most challenging parts of this project were the layered epoxy pour and figuring out how to build the stand. I was going for a leaping out of the water look, which was tough to do.
The early photos show the rough form on its shop cradle, long before any finish. In the finished piece the polished body arcs up out of a clear epoxy column that spreads into a deep-blue pool on a round base.
